Carpobrotus edulis – Benefits and Uses
Carpobrotus edulis, commonly known as Hottentot Fig, Ice Plant, or Sour Fig, is a succulent groundcover native to South Africa and widely found along coastal regions. It is popular for its bright purple flowers and thick, fleshy leaves.
Traditionally, this plant has been used in folk medicine for various purposes. The gel-like sap from the leaves is applied topically to treat minor cuts, burns, insect bites, and skin irritations. It is also used as a natural soothing remedy for sunburn and acne. In some cultures, a tea made from the leaves is used for sore throats, mouth infections, and digestive issues like diarrhea.
Beyond medicinal uses, Carpobrotus edulis is commonly planted for soil stabilization, especially in sandy or coastal areas, because it spreads quickly and helps prevent erosion. Its edible fruit, known as “sour fig”, has a tangy taste and is sometimes used to make jam or eaten fresh.
Although some social media sources claim it can cure vitiligo or psoriasis, these claims are not supported by scientific research, so it’s important to consult a doctor before using it for such conditions.
